The Church of Our Lady of Mednikov is a Byzantine monument to the Frankish domination of Thessaloniki.
A striking example of medieval Constantinople temple architecture, the church "Panagia Chalkeon" - gr. "Our Lady of the Medes", was built in 1028 in the area where the workshops of coppersmiths were located. The ktitor of the temple, Lombard ruler Christopher of Thessaloniki, was buried in the territory of the temple. The church, built entirely of brick, is colloquially called the Red Church.
During Ottoman rule, the temple, like many other Christian temples in Thessaloniki, became a mosque with the name "Mednikov Mosque". It is located far below the level of the modern city in the very center - at the intersection of Egnatia Street and Aristotle Square.
Opposite the church (across Egnatia Avenue) is the central market of Thessaloniki, where you can taste and buy all kinds of local delicacies, from great Greek olives and fruits, to freshly caught fish.
Just above the temple is the famous flea market of Beat Bazaar, which may be of interest to antique lovers and antique dealers.
The temple is located at the intersection of the main avenue of Thessaloniki, Egnatia Street, and Aristotle Square.
