Richtis Gorge and Waterfall

Richtis Gorge: The European Tropics

The Rihtis Gorge and Falls are magnificent landscapes and an extraordinary atmosphere of primordiality.

In the eastern part of Crete is one of the most picturesque places of this Greek island - Richtis Gorge. Located on the outskirts of Heraklion, it attracts tourists from all over the world. And it is not surprising: the luxurious fauna can easily compete with the tropical exotics. The thick vegetation is diluted with blooming fruit trees and bushes. Sprawling palms look unusual in this area. Trees everywhere, intricately curved and tangled with vines. Blooming oleanders and orchids, giant ferns will impress even experienced travelers, not to mention children.

After half of the route (about 1.5 km) you reach a large wooden staircase. Instead of the tedious ascent and descent, get ready for a fascinating photo walk, because the picturesque Richtis waterfall is just around the corner. The flow of the stream, tumbling down a steep cliff, forms a clear lagoon below. Here you can take a break, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the secluded spot. The cool water will give you new energy and vigor.

Those wishing to go even farther (about a kilometer) get to the wild beach. Here is equipped with a small recreation area. From the shore, covered with bushes of delicate tamarisk, there is a magnificent panorama overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the canyon.

The gorge and Richtis Falls impress with the pristine nature along the way. The body of water almost disappears from view, then appears from behind huge boulders, forming a system of rapids and small waterfalls. As if in a fairy garden, fruit trees grow everywhere (pomegranate, citrus, figs). On your way you will often meet exotic butterflies, rare species of reptiles and birds. Of architecture - the old water mills. Standing here for decades, they are like part of the landscape, adding a special flavor to it.

Useful Info

When going to the gorge to Richtis Falls, choose comfortable shoes that are not afraid of water. Trekking sandals are best for the climb. A big advantage of the route is the absence of outlets. In addition to a snack, be sure to take fresh water with you. You can refill it only on the beach, the mountain water is not suitable for drinking.
