The legacy of the past: Posidi in history

The name of the resort of Posidi is associated with the cult of Poseidon worship. Long time ago the village was inhabited by fishermen who revered the god of the seas. For the Hellenes, this area was a cult place: there was the temple of Poseidon here. For the first time in the history Posidi was mentioned in the V century BC. e. - then it belonged to the ancient city of Mendi. Information about Posidi can be found in the writings of the historian Thucydides and in the manuscripts found on St. Athos. Almost 1000 years the temple was active and preserved several buildings. You can see the main temple at the site of excavation - a building with a partially preserved arch, several columns. Some of the most interesting findings are friezes depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The temple of Poseidon is located on the cape, which attracts lovers of beautiful species. An altar was also found near the temple - sacrifices and rituals were performed here. The inscriptions on it allowed us to establish: Poseidon was worshiped here from antiquity to Roman times.

Another landmark of Possidi is the lighthouse of 1864. It is located on the outskirts of the beach. At the time of completion, the lighthouse stood at the very edge of the water, but over time, as you can see, the sea receded. Also it is worth visiting  the Church of the Blessed Virgin.
