At the cradle of European Christianity

“The cultural and philosophical heritage of ancient Athens not only served as the foundation for European civilization, but also helped the Hellenes to learn the truths of the Christian faith”.

Surely, everyone knows that Athens is the territory of the birth of civilization. Modern trends make themselves felt - the endless noise and fuss constantly accompany residents and visitors of the city, however, ancient exhibits remind us of many who want to see and learn the invisible at first glance. Attractions, exclusive exhibits, ancient universities, temples are fraught with inexhaustible sources of spirituality. Christianity appeared in Athens with the disciple of Jesus Paul. His preaching interested many Athenians, and after several centuries Christianity became here the state religion. Why is it worth visiting all the ancient monuments of Orthodoxy? First, in order to draw spiritual strength, and secondly, it is interesting, thirdly, it is very beautiful.

The Little Metropolis

The church of St. Elephtery is a small building of the 12th century, the architecture of which combines an ancient, early Byzantine, Roman direction. Once there was a library, storing Byzantine manuscripts, the church was also a metropolis and was named after the Blessed Virgin.

The sultans and emperors’ shelter

The Kaisariani Monastery is still active in Greece. On Mount Hymettos, amidst beautiful forest nature, it was built on the initiative of a little-known Caesarea. Christianity here is closely intertwined with Greek mythology. So, the attention of the traveler is sure to attract the source of Aphrodite, made of marble, treating for infertility. Tradition tells of the erection of the monastery in place of the Roman sanctuary dedicated to Aphrodite and Demeter.

It is cross-shaped, which is considered traditional for Byzantine churches. The territory of the church is calm and beautiful, which is facilitated by a picturesque mountain landscape and clean air.

Painting by Photis Kontoglou

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea is built in the center of Athens on the remains of an ancient temple. The new church here was erected in honor of the Mother of God. The walls of the temple are interesting in that they are painted by Photis Kontoglou, a famous icon painter of the 20th century. This artist was able to combine in his works the traditions of Byzantine writing and modern realities.

Holy Warriors

The Church of Saints Theodore reminds everyone who prays in it about Theodore Stratelates and Theodore Tiron. Famous warriors today are considered patrons and defenders of the Christian world.

The Legend of Apollo and Daphne

Outside the city, in 11 km from Athens there is the most beautiful monastery in Daphne. Brick masonry, artificial mosaic will not leave indifferent visitors to this masterpiece of architecture. The legend says that earlier on this place the sanctuary of Apollo was located, and a nymph named Daphne was turned into a laurel bush, fleeing escape from the enamored Apollo.

The monastery had faced the heyday and falling had before it was given to the Orthodox in 1458. For some time a psychiatric hospital operated within its walls. Today, the walls of the monastery are constantly undergoing restoration.
