Orthodox shrines of Athens

The Legend of Apollo and Daphne

Outside the city, in 11 km from Athens there is the most beautiful monastery in Daphne. Brick masonry, artificial mosaic will not leave indifferent visitors to this masterpiece of architecture. The legend says that earlier on this place the sanctuary of Apollo was located, and a nymph named Daphne was turned into a laurel bush, fleeing escape from the enamored Apollo.

The monastery had faced the heyday and falling had before it was given to the Orthodox in 1458. For some time a psychiatric hospital operated within its walls. Today, the walls of the monastery are constantly undergoing restoration.
