Vourvourou is a resort area on the Sithonia peninsula, surrounded by lush greenery and uninhabited islets. Its exotic beauty is the main decoration of all tourist guides in Halkidiki. On Sithonia there are no more beautiful bays, landscapes and the same amazing color of sea water.

"The land of the barbarians": the history of Vourvourou

The history of the future resort dates back to the 10th century. The monastery of Jerome, later transferred to Athos monastery of Xenophon was located the in these lands. During the Byzantine era, the territory was called "Land of the Barbarians", which after minor distortions turned into "Vourvourou". At the beginning of the XVII century, the land belonged to the inhabitants of the village of Agios Nikolaos. They managed the territories at their discretion: they transferred the rights to another monastery - this time to Simonopetra. But in the XIX century the monks were forced to leave the property because of internal disagreements.

During the excavations in the early 1970s, we managed to find out that Vourvourou has even more ancient history than it was previously thought. Here found the remains of the settlement that was part of the Athenian Union. The same studies helped to discover fragments of the buildings of the monastery Jeromemon.

Modern Vourvourou is not a village in common sense. The area comes to life only before summer season: there are always a few local residents living here, and in the hot months, the Greeks themselves come to rest in their summer houses. In Vourvourou you can spend time in fish taverns, hire a car, buy souvenirs and find apartments for every taste and budget.

Here is the chapel of the Virgin - it stands on the site of the monastery Jeromemon. Also, in Vourvourou, the buildings of the monastic farmsteads were preserved.

It takes 10 minutes from Vourvourou to get to the village of Ormos Panagias. It  is attractive to the guests of Halkidiki: there are excellent taverns, a Byzantine temple. But in addition, Ormos Panagias is the starting point for cruises to Athos and other sea voyages. Near to Ormos Pangias - Agios Nikolaos. Vourvourou Coast: beaches and coves

Speaking of Vourvourou beaches, there are associations with paradise beaches and amazing bays. Swimming here is a great pleasure. The sea off the coast of Vourvourou is shallow, always calm and transparent. The sandy beach is suitable for resting with children and will appeal to those who want to spend time away from noise. But active entertainment is also available: you can rent a surfboard or ride a catamaran.

The Vourvourou coast is not only central, but also several neighboring beaches. Natural beauty stands out Kardi - a sandy bay with a turquoise sea. There are many tourists here, but only a couple of stalls are from the infrastructure. Caridi is amazing  for resting with children due to the absence of waves and a gentle entrance to the sea. Bahia beach is 2.5 km from the center of Vourvourou - lovers of outdoor activities will adore it. There are bars and water entertainments. But in high season on Bahia there are always a lot of tourists.

There is a beach near the teaching town, but on this stretch of coast the depth is quite sharply. The sea is open to the winds and can storms. The advantages of this beach are picturesque bays and the absence of crowds of holidaymakers.
